Mortal Sin Beginner Guide
Mortal Sin is a chaotic, blood-soaked first-person action roguelike developed by Nikola Todorovic. This beginner guide covers everything you need to start your first run: picking a class, understanding controls, learning the combo system, and navigating area progression.
Choosing Your First Class
Mortal Sin features 16 playable classes, each with unique weapons, combos, and signature abilities. For your first run, we recommend starting with the Berserker or Pirate. The Berserker is a greatsword-wielding destroyer with straightforward, aggression-based combat that forgives mistakes. The Pirate brings guns and bombs, letting you deal damage from range while learning enemy patterns.
Both classes are rated Easy difficulty and provide a gentle introduction to the combat system. Once you understand the core mechanics, you can experiment with more complex classes like the Duelist (Very Hard) or the Enigma (Very Hard). Check the full classes overview to compare all 16 options.
Understanding Controls and Combat
Mortal Sin features full controller support (Xbox) and keyboard/mouse play. The core combat loop revolves around attacking, guarding, kicking, and using class abilities. Guarding at the right moment triggers a Parry — a well-timed guard that costs no stamina and sets up your next attack as a whirlwind with an explosion effect. Parrying is one of the most important skills to master early.
Other key moves include Bash (a secondary attack; hold to sprint), Kick (secondary attack with knockback), Thrust, and Whirlwind (a spin attack). Power Strikes deal double damage, and Critical Strikes deal double damage based on your Luck stat. Learning how these moves chain together into combos is the key to surviving and thriving.
The Combo System Basics
Combos chain multiple moves before a timer runs out. Each combo level grants gold, potion essence, and invincibility frames. The higher your combo level, the more rewards you earn and the safer you become. Combos are the heart of Mortal Sin's combat — they reward aggressive, skilled play while providing defensive benefits through invincibility.
Key combo terms to know: Hit Cancel (canceling one attack into another), Invincibility (granted at combo milestones), and Ability (unique per class). For a full breakdown of combo mechanics, check our Combo System Guide.
Area Progression and Unlocking New Areas
Mortal Sin has 6 areas: Dungeon (unlocked by default), Cave (unlocked by completing Dungeon A-5), Forest (unlocked by completing Dungeon B-5 or Cave C-5), Vessel (unlocked after completing Dungeon C-5, Cave C-5, and Forest C-5), Trial of Resolve (unlocked after completing Dungeon A-5 and Cave A-5), and Maw of Sin (unlocked after completing any C-5 area).
Each run, you choose 3 of 4 areas. Completed areas are locked for the rest of that run. Quests appear randomly in each area, and you can press T or down on the D-pad to track your progress. Area levels range from A-2 to A-5, B-2 to B-5, and C-2 to C-5, with rewards including Vitality Overwhelming, Extra Health Potion, Crafting Anvil, Halberd, Blizzard, and more.
Sin Level and Leveling Up
Your Sin Level is determined by the total sinful essence collected during a run. Each Sin Level grants +5 Health, +2 Attack, +2 Defense, +2 Speed, and +2 Luck. You start at zero Sin Level, but after completing milestones you can begin runs with up to 4 Sin Levels.
You acquire sinful essence by defeating elite enemies, completing challenge portals, participating in the Feast of Fright, or purchasing at the HUB via Sinful Offering. For detailed leveling strategies, see our Leveling Guide.
Early Mistakes to Avoid
One common beginner mistake is neglecting the Parry mechanic. Parrying is free (no stamina cost) and sets up devastating counter-attacks. Practice the timing early — it will carry you through the entire game. Another mistake is overcommitting to attacks without watching the combo timer. If your combo drops, you lose invincibility and reward bonuses.
Finally, don't ignore quests. Randomly generated quests in each area provide valuable rewards and sinful essence. Press T or down on the D-pad to track your current quest progress. Completing quests is one of the most efficient ways to gain power during a run.
