Mortal Sin Combo System Guide

The combo system is the heart of Mortal Sin's combat. Combos chain multiple moves before a timer runs out, and each combo level grants gold, potion essence, and invincibility. This guide covers all combo mechanics — parry, whirlwind, power strike, critical strike, hit cancel, and more — to help you master the combat.

How Combos Work

Combos in Mortal Sin chain multiple moves together before a timer runs out. Every time you land a move — an attack, kick, parry, ability, or dash — the combo counter increases. As long as you continue landing moves before the timer expires, your combo level rises. Each combo level grants gold, potion essence, and invincibility frames, making higher combo levels both rewarding and protective.

The combo system creates a rhythm-based combat flow. You're constantly rewarded for aggressive, skilled play — the more moves you chain, the more resources you earn and the safer you become. However, if the timer runs out or you miss an attack, the combo resets. This creates a tension between aggression and precision that defines Mortal Sin's combat.

Key Combat Moves

Understanding each move is essential for building effective combos. Here are the core moves that feed into the combo system:

Parry — A well-timed guard that costs no stamina. A successful parry sets your next attack to be a whirlwind with an explosion effect. Parrying is the most important defensive and offensive tool in the game, as it both nullifies incoming damage and sets up devastating counter-attacks.

Ability — Unique per class. Each of the 16 classes has its own ability that integrates into the combo system. Abilities provide class-specific effects like dashes, area attacks, or self-buffs.

Attack — The basic melee strike. Attacks are the building blocks of most combos.

Bash — A secondary attack. Hold to sprint. Bash provides a different damage type and can stagger enemies.

Kick — A secondary attack with knockback. Kicks are useful for spacing and crowd control, pushing enemies away to create room for follow-up attacks.

Thrust — A forward stabbing attack that covers distance and can hit multiple enemies in a line.

Whirlwind, Power Strike, and Critical Strike

Whirlwind — A spin attack that hits all enemies around you. Whirlwinds are triggered after a successful parry, making parry-to-whirlwind one of the most powerful combo openers. The whirlwind also includes an explosion effect that deals additional area damage.

Power Strike — A strike that deals double damage. Power Strikes are high-impact moves that can dramatically increase your damage output within a combo chain.

Critical Strike — A strike that deals double damage based on your Luck stat. Higher Luck means more frequent Critical Strikes. Critical Strikes are unpredictable but devastating, making Luck a valuable stat for burst-damage builds.

Hit Cancel and Combo Maintenance

Hit Cancel is the technique of canceling one attack animation into another move. This is essential for maintaining combo chains — by canceling the recovery frames of one attack into the startup of another, you can chain moves faster and keep the combo timer from expiring.

Mastering Hit Cancel separates good players from great ones. It allows you to maintain high combo levels even against single targets, where the natural rhythm of combat might otherwise cause the timer to expire. Practice canceling attacks into kicks, kicks into bashes, and bashes back into attacks to build long, unbroken combo chains.

Invincibility and Combo Rewards

Invincibility is granted at combo milestones. When your combo reaches certain levels, you gain temporary invincibility frames, making you immune to damage. This creates a powerful incentive to maintain high combos — not only do you earn more gold and potion essence, but you also become harder to kill.

The combination of invincibility frames and combo rewards creates a positive feedback loop: the better you fight, the more resources you earn and the safer you become. This is why aggressive, skilled play is consistently rewarded in Mortal Sin — overconfidence may lead to death, but controlled aggression leads to victory.

Combo Tips for Each Class

Each of the 16 classes integrates differently into the combo system. The Berserker's Charge ability provides invincibility frames that can extend combo chains safely. The Pirate's ranged attacks allow for combo maintenance at a distance. The Duelist's parry-focused playstyle creates consistent parry-to-whirlwind chains.

For class-specific combo strategies, check our Classes page and read individual class guides. Each class page covers signature abilities and how they integrate into the combo system.

Stats That Affect Combos

Several stats directly impact your combo effectiveness. Speed affects your attack and movement speed, making it easier to maintain combo chains. Luck influences Critical Strike frequency, adding burst damage to your combos. Attack increases your base damage, making each combo hit more impactful. Sin Level increases all of these stats simultaneously.

For optimal combo performance, prioritize Speed and Luck alongside Attack. A fast, lucky character can maintain long combo chains with frequent Critical Strikes, maximizing both damage output and combo rewards. See our Leveling Guide for strategies to increase these stats through Sin Level progression.
