Mortal Sin Gameplay Guide

Mortal Sin is a chaotic, blood-soaked first-person action roguelike where you carve through procedurally generated nightmares with brutal melee and flashy, satisfying combos. This gameplay guide covers the core game loop, combat mechanics, exploration, quests, enemies, and bosses.

The Core Game Loop

Each run in Mortal Sin follows a roguelike loop: enter an area, fight through procedurally generated rooms, complete quests, defeat the area boss, collect rewards and sinful essence, and progress to the next area. Death resets your run but keeps permanent unlocks, milestones, and achievements. This creates a satisfying cycle of progression where every attempt makes you stronger.

You choose 3 of 4 areas per run, with completed areas locked for the rest of that run. This forces strategic decision-making about which areas to tackle and in what order. Quests appear randomly in each area, and you can press T or down on the D-pad to track your progress.

Combat Mechanics

Combat in Mortal Sin is skill-based and brutal. The core moves include Attack, Parry (well-timed guard that costs no stamina and triggers a whirlwind next attack with explosion), Ability (unique per class), Bash (secondary attack; hold to sprint), Kick (secondary with knockback), Thrust, and Whirlwind (spin attack). Power Strikes deal double damage, and Critical Strikes deal double damage based on Luck.

The combo system chains these moves together. Each combo level grants gold, potion essence, and invincibility frames. Combos must be completed before a timer runs out, creating a rhythm-based combat flow. Hit Cancel — canceling one attack into another — is essential for maintaining combo chains. For a full breakdown, see our Combo System Guide.

Area Exploration and Progression

Mortal Sin features 6 distinct areas, each with unique enemies, environments, and bosses. The Dungeon is unlocked by default and features Zombies, Wraiths, Fire Wraiths, and Sword Knights. The Cave (unlocked by completing Dungeon A-5) features Mummies, Haruspexes, Haruspex Summoners, and Spear Knights. The Forest features Maniacs, Zealots, Spear Knights, and Metamorphs.

The Vessel area features Cutthroats, Dead Shots, Devourers, and Boomers. The Trial of Resolve is unlocked after completing Dungeon A-5 and Cave A-5. The Maw of Sin — the final area — is unlocked after completing any C-5 area. Each area has levels from A-2 to A-5, B-2 to B-5, and C-2 to C-5. See our Maps page for full unlock requirements.

Quests and Random Generation

Quests in Mortal Sin are randomly generated and appear in each area. They provide valuable rewards including sinful essence, gold, items, and area-specific upgrades. Area A rewards include Vitality Overwhelming, Extra Health Potion, Crafting Anvil, and Trial of Resolve. Area B rewards include Halberd, Blizzard, Demonic Tutor, and Sinful Offering.

Area C rewards include Focused Strike, Manifest Weapon, Sin Ward, and Sin Affinity. Trials include Trial A, B, C, and the Final Trial. Press T or down on the D-pad to track your current quest progress. The procedural generation extends to room layouts, enemy placements, and quest objectives, ensuring no two runs are identical.

Enemies and Bosses

Mortal Sin features dozens of unique enemies across its 6 areas. Each area has its own enemy roster with distinct attack patterns and behaviors. Elite enemies — those with colored outlines — drop sinful essence and are priority targets during runs. Unique enemies include the Immortal Construct, Witch, Divino, and Scares.

There are 5 main bosses: Baron of Sin (Dungeon), Apostle (Cave), Lord of Redemption (Forest), Cursed King (Vessel), and Embodiment of Sin (Maw of Sin). Each boss guards its respective area and must be defeated to progress. The Embodiment of Sin is the final boss, requiring specific preparation: Helena at level 8, three Trials of Resolve in a single run, and three Oaths applied during that run.

Mortal Sin features a huge arsenal of weapons across multiple categories. Melee weapons include Sword, Axe, Spear, Hammer, Scythe, Halberd, Guan Dao, Cleaver, Devil Arm, Divine Radiance, Divine Retribution, Hundred Man Slayer, Ram Dao, Serpent Stinger, Sickle, Sinblade, and Unarmed. Sin Remnants System

The "Remnants of Sin" update (early 2026) introduced a new Sin Remnants system. When you die or continue to the next round, Sin Remnants appear and you pick one of three remnants that twist your next run. This adds a roguelike meta-layer where each run carries forward modifiers from your previous attempt.

There are 40 remnants in total, organized into three categories. Defensive remnants (like Anchor, Frostskin, and Shatter) focus on survivability. Offensive remnants (like Bloodlust, Execution, and Ricochet) boost your damage output. Run-economy remnants (like Carryover, Greed, and Windfall) affect resources and rewards across runs.
